Why design was commissioned by MCE Services to design the branding for their new Cost management software.


The software was designed to help building project managers and self-builders manage their project costs from estimation to completion. The software was to be called 'Hornbeam' and needed to reflect that this was a tree.


A variety of logo designs were presented not only answering the brief but also providing something different to think about (1, 2, 3). The chosen design was explored in a variety of colour ways and we began to look at how the logo would work across other brand communication applicable to the product such as CD packaging, Installation CD graphics and the loading 'splash screen' (4). This gave the client the chance to develop an informed decision when choosing the final design and colour way.

A brand guidelines manual was created (5) with the logo design provided in a variety of formats to cover print, web and in-house usage.

Hornbeam was launched at the Home Building and Renovation show and Why Design was asked to implement the Hornbeam branding across their exhibition graphics (6), promotional leaflet (7) and poster. Using our experience in marketing & promotional design we provided assistance to their copy writing, image usage and print buying to create a successful launch.
